Monroe v Hopkins
Background
In *Monroe v Hopkins* [2017], the claimant, blogger Jack Monroe, brought a libel case against the defendant, journalist Katie Hopkins, over two defamatory tweets. Hopkins implied that Monroe had either vandalized a war memorial or condoned its vandalization. The court ruled in favor of Monroe, concluding that the tweets were defamatory under the Defamation Act 2013. Monroe was awarded £24,000 in damages for the serious harm caused to her reputation.
