Y v Poland was a case heard in February 2022 where a trans man who had undergone gender reasignment and had changed his birth certificate from female to male in 1992. There was a reference on the birth certificate stating that he had had this done. The applicant requested in 2008 that the reference be removed and an entirely new birth certificate with no reference to the modification be supplied but this request was declined by the Opole regional administrative court. This decision was upheld by the Polish Supreme Court
In 2011 the applicant further requested a new birth certificate without the ammendments which was again denied.
The applicant brought the case to the ECtHR under Article 8 and Article 14. It was ultimately within their margin of appreciation to decline the new birth certificate
